This weekend almost made me want to reside in Maryland forever and ever.  :)   Friday was beautiful outside, I got of work early and went to my favorite grocery store of all time (Wegmans), got home in time to take Pinot for a 6 mile walk before Nick got home….and then we went to get our iPhones (woot woot!) and ended the night with Crank 2 and iPhone apps.

Saturday was more gorgeous weather wise than Friday was, and it was also Pinot’s 2nd birthday!  (Happy birthday to Pinot!  Yes, I am a big dork that celebrates the birthdays of our pets, though Cashew is a bit harder to bake for.  Anyway….)  Nick, Pinot & I set off for a wonderful hike and picnic at Downs Memorial Park.  This park was wonderful – we didn’t go that far hiking (only 3.5 miles or so), but we spent a bit of time on the dog beach and set up a wonderful picnic on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay.  I would head over to that spot with my favorite boy and dog every day if I could, it was perfect.  We came back toward the city a few hours later and headed over to see EP’s new place – winding down a perfect afternoon into a great evening with friends and dogs, and dog birthday cakes.

And the weekend is capped with my favorite kind of lazy sunday.  it doesn’t get much better than this!

Pinot & I set off on a hiking adventure today to give Nick some quality time to get some work done on the home front without us, aaah, distracting him.  (For some reason, he doesn’t seem to think he can get much done with us here….he even asked us to bring Cashew along for the ride!)

anyhow, it was a gorgeous day, and Pinot & I set off for about 6 miles on the C&O Canal towpath.  Actually, the C&O canal is dried up where we were in Southern Frederick county, but we were walking along the Potomac River for the entire way.  Pinot enjoyed a couple of mini dips – as much as she could without being taken off the leash anyway.

We stopped on the way back at the Lewis Farm market (Whoohoo!) and I picked up a big box of tomatoes, a big box of peaches, some corn, nectarines, honey gold apples – yum!

Gorgeous, and loving being in town for a bit.  Saturday we hiked around not one, but two lakes in the area – Lake Needwood and Lake Frank – it’s funny how it can feel so rural only 6 miles from the hustle and bustle around our house.  Both lakes had their merit – the first was a nice place for Pinot to wade, the second was more of a ‘hike’ – and it had a bird refuge at the end.  Nick’s wingspan is actually more than Michael Phelps, too bad he didn’t get into swimming :)   One of the birds was a bald eagle that had been hurt badly and permanently lives in the refuge – it was cool to see one that up close!

What a great weekend at home. Caught up on a couple of movies (though both Sex & the City and I Am Legend weren’t as good as we thought they’d be).

On Saturday, Mehul joined Nick, Pinot and I for a hike at Riverbend & Great Falls Parks in VA. I think we all had a lot of fun, and followed it up with lunch outside in Bethesda. Pinot was exhausted!

On Sunday, we met up with Patterson & Connor at Wheaton Regional Park for a bit of doggie playtime in the sunshine.

Managed to get a decent amount done around the house this weekend too!

Mmmm….nice weather calls for a lovely hike at Catoctin Mountain Park up north of Frederick. It turned out to be quite the off-roading (off-pathing?) experience, climbing up and down the rocks of the falls and around off the trails trying to get where we really wanted to go. Probably only was about 6 miles total, but it felt like much much more than that – we were all pretty glad to get home! (Qualms in the dry area about the stupid, stupid guy that we saw smoking….and all of the parents that thought ‘hey, that’s a great idea, lets climb to the top of the dangerous falls with our young toddlers, i’m in bad shape bu i can hold them’ – wondering if either of those had anything to do with the multitude of sirens and firetrucks we saw heading in on our way out of the park.)

And Cashew is glad to have us back. With that said, check out this video about engineers explaining cats.

What better to do after a full day of rain than to get out and hike in the mud? I’m a bit behind, this was a couple of weeks ago now (4/6/2008)…

&& the C&O canal for hiking on 80 degree Sundays in October :D

….a 9.7 mile hike :) We put the ‘60 Hikes within 60 Miles of Washington DC’ book to use and checked out the Magruder and Lower Madruder Branch Trails up by our house – even finished an hour earlier than the book expected us to, and that included playing around on the stepping stones to cross the creek. Good times :)
