Today was a great day for tying up loose ends.  Not in terms of housework unfortunately, but in terms of other stuff.  For example:

  • Pinot had her follow up vet exam yet again, and the ear infection is *finally* gone!  Woo hoo!  She got the first dose of the doggie flu shot too.
  • Got the remaining original picture files from the Munich trip today.  Keyword tagged people, approximate geo-tagged, and rolled in to existing folders.  Created a webpage for ALL of the original prints that will be unveiled later this week….to those in the circle.
  • Booked a hotel for New Orleans – this was the cheapest, best rated, close to the French Quarter AND close to the start line giving a discount for people signed up for one of the races, and I wanted to book it early to make sure there were rooms available.  done!
  • Figured out our plans for Thanksgiving/weekend.  Now I just need to convince Nick that he wants to do a Turkey Trot with me on Thanksgiving morning.
  • Confirmed the Christmas plans with all the key players and everyone is on board.
  • Finished and ordered a fun surprise.  Stay tuned. IMG_0312

The housework did live to see another day, but at least we had a really yummy dinner to go along with the season finale of Greek tonight courtesy of this  Onion Custard Pie Recipe.  I have no idea what the difference between this “custard pie” and a “quiche” is, but I do know that this recipe was pretty darned good.  I’ve started making a batch of pie crusts and freezing the dough so it’s ready to go at a moments notice on nights like this, when the urge for something with a crust arises.  I’d like to think that I made the recipe a bit lighter by skipping the 1/2 and 1/2 and subbing skim milk, but the butter probably counteracted any of that.  This took a bit to make, between the parallel (onions cooking/pre-baking crust) followed by the actual oven time, but the result was quite tasty and filling.  Considering how much Nick was wandering around the house before dinner complaining that he had to tighten his belt to forget the hunger pains, one serving and the boy was filled.

Bonus points to those of you that got the Troll 2 reference.  :)

Munich Day 31All our hard work was put to the test today, our day of 4 reservations in the big and small tents of Oktoberfest. The late night yesterday had everyone dragging for tent #1, though the food was awesome. Tent #2, our big tent Kafer, more than exceeded expectations…. We skipped tent #3 to stay at #2 as we thought we would. Tent #4 was a nice lower key way to wind down the evening. Late night bar with another mass and some pizza to say adios to those heading out in the morning.

MunichDay21It was a bit rough for most to wake up this morning, but for the 6 of us that got up and met up by 9, a walk around the Oktoberfest grounds 3 hours before the first tapping allowed us to see the already packed big tents….it also gave us, all 5′9″ and over, front row standing spots for the kickoff Oktoberfest parade. Beautiful horses! Met up with the masses at Hofbrauhaus for lunch and the majority of the afternoon before heading to the englishter garden to another beer garden. Late night back towards Marienplatz…. Getting up tomorrow will be fun.

Just in time to make the trip back to Germany. :)

Today was brilliant.  Got up, leisurely breakfast, did a few hours of Picture 1work remotely.  Took Pinot for a long walk.  Went to the mall.  Worked on some Oktoberfest stuff – big pamphlet that is just about done.  Figured out what we were doing for Nick’s local birthday festivities (Troll 2 movie night!).  Watched EuroTrip, Glee and Greek.  I love being at home :)

I’m sort of impressed that I was only at work for 3 days this week, and I have enough extra hours to take picture-3Monday off (I thought I was going to be at work on Monday!  Well, I’ll probably still work a bit from home, but still…nice to not be stuck to the office chair the entire day.)

Anyhow, the house is feeling fairly organized, vaccuumed and all my laundry is done and folded if not yet put away.  Actually made dinner tonight from our latest CSA goodies, and roasted/pickled some beet salad for this weekend.  I actually got my car vacuumed out and completely cleaned today too, which I’m really excited about since it’s the first time it’s been deep cleaned like that since we got the pets.  (ever?)  Anyway, lots of pet hair is now not in the car any longer.  Woot woot!

But – the most exciting thing about today is that we went through and booked the rest of the hotels/hostels for our trip!  We cranked through a good week or so of ‘different city each night’ and got everything set up tonight and I’m totally excited about it.  In honor of the trip, now coming up in less than 2 weeks, here is another rough map of our trip plans!

Splitting Hairs We kicked off Silverdocs 2009 with a viewing of “Splitting Hairs” last night at the Round House Theater in Silver Spring.  The documentary – and it’s filmmakers – was/were hilarious.  Any 30 minute movie about a beard and mustache worldwide competition must be, wouldn’t you think? Some of the footage was pure gold – wonder why they stopped at 30 minutes.  Anyway.  One of the filmmakers was (seemingly) so excited about the opening that he overindulged in (alcohol?) before the screening and was completely out of it the entire time, which made for an eventful pre- and post- screening commentary.  Note that the text link above will take you to the website of the movie itself, while the picture (should) take you to the AFI commentary on the movie.  Nick and I both thought it had a sort of “King of Kong” feel, and completely dug seeing Phil Olson in person leading the AFI Beard & Mustache contest after the screening.  (I can’t help but think that Nick B-R would be all about this!)

And with that, we’re off to the races with another 6 documentaries over the next day and a half.  Our full schedule is below – let us know if we should be looking out for you at any of these!  Info on each of the movies can be found here.

In other random news, this week we booked tickets to Amsterdam!  Woohoo!  Nick is going for the full week for EuroPar, and meeting me in Amsterdam proper on Saturday for a long weekend in the Netherlands.  I’ve never been, and am pretty excited.  Any travel tips?  Let me know – I’ve been searching TripAdvisor thus far and am pumped.

In other travel news – all of the hard work with booking Oktoberfest tents seems to be paying off, as yesterday Frau Rutar (that’s me!) received another table reservation offer via snail mail for Sunday at noon.  We’ve now secured 4 table reservations from noon-end on Sunday!  That’s a lot of beer … and a lot of chicken …  can’t wait :)

And one more set of travel stuff – I’m working on a new project at work with a demo in Seoul, South Korea in August!  I was so excited to go, before I realized that with the long flight, I’d have to miss a family wedding…and thus, no South Korea for me this summer.  In future phases though, that may be a good excuse to go!

Local news – after 6 years of living in the DC metro area – we just last weekend made it to the Jefferson Memorial.  I dug it.

—-Follow Up —

SilverDocs was the awesome, and is officially something I’d miss if we ever left this area.  All the films were great – looking forward to getting a pass next year!

Nick and I are getting cautiously excited about heading to Oktoberfest next year in Germany.  In leafing through the Montgomery County class lists at the end of the summer, lo and behold, check out this class:

Dance-Dances of Oktoberfest
Adults:Learn the dances of Herb Fredricksen’s German Dance Group ‘Bairisch und Steirisch’ the official performers in the Germantown Oktoberfest. Landlers: Austria’s orginal Waltz forms; Scohottisches:German time honored Twostep/Onestep combinations; Czech Polkas and Polish Mazurkas and more. Then be surprised as Herb interprets how their elements became part of Swing, Disco, Hustle, County Western and Salsa.

And so – of course, I threw it out there as something we should take, and now we are taking Oktoberfest dance classes on Wednesday nights through mid-November!  We are so going to be ready to dance at Oktoberfest next year.  The class description sounds awesome – with Czech and Polish backgrounds heading to Germany, we’re getting a bit of everything.  (NJ’s parents put us to shame with the polka skills at our wedding – after this we can potentially give them a run for their money :) )

Our first class was last week, and it was, at best, a bit shady?  Not sure if that is the right word for it, but it wasn’t really what we were expecting.  Possibly because we were the only two ’students’ in the class, the rest of the group was comprised of Herb’s actual German dance group. And we essentially spend the first hour counting to 3 and marching around the room.

Our second class was last night, and I have to say, I think it was the highlight of the day for both of us.  It was worlds different from last week – we were doing less marching, more dancing.  The same dance through the class, till at the end it was a bit more comfortable to do.  We ended the class by making the dance social (changing partners around the circle) to the mexican version of the czech ‘roll out the barrell’, and then put a polish twist on it and did the same moves in polka time.   I actually worked up a sweat by the end of the night.   Fun fun fun :)

We may go check out the Germantown Oktoberfest this Saturday to see our dance teacher and his group (our ‘classmates’ – ha) perform.  It was pretty cool!    I think we’re both a bit relieved that last nights class was cool, because now it’s something to look forward to in weeks ahead.  :)
